Department member Dr. David McLean publishes new book on the prevention of second primary cancers
Vancouver - September 1, 2008 - Some patients who are treated for cancer arising within a specific organ may develop a second cancer that is completely different from the first malignancy. In their new book, “The Prevention of Second Primary Cancers”, co-authors Hans Krueger, David McLean, and Dan Williams explore the epidemiology and prevention strategies for second primary cancers. For example the authors point out that patients with skin cancer are at a higher risk for developing one of the following second primary cancers: breast, prostate, gastrointestinal, lymphoma, lung, bladder, oral, leukemia, kidney, and cervix. This volume will be a valuable reference tool for developing new screening and management programs for cancer patients. Dr. McLean is a professor in the Department of Dermatology and Skin Science and also serves as the Cancer Prevention Program Leader for the British Columbia Cancer Agency .
