Vancouver, B.C. - September 12, 2007 - Dr. Tom Taylor passed away last week on September 5, 2007. Tom was an excellent and dedicated dermatologist, colleague, and teacher. He was a very active member of our academic department, and made the time to attend many of our official meetings and events even well into his retirement.

Dr. Thomas Taylor: 1927-2007

Prior to becoming a dermatologist, Tom served in the military in the UK and Canada. In 1958 he began launched his medical career on the west coast at Lions Gate Hospital as a general practitioner including obstetrics. He joined the UBC Dermatology program and helped inaugurate our local specialty training program by becoming our first resident trainee between 1966-69. He completed his dermatology training through a prestigious McLaughlin Teaching Fellowship to study dermatology at St. John’s Dermatologic Institute in London, England (1969-70).

Tom returned to British Columbia in 1970 and established his consulting dermatology practice in North Vancouver. Over the years he also made time to serve as the Chief of Medicine for Lions Gate Hospital (1975-77). He was recruited to UBC as a faculty member and officially retired from this position in 1993 as a Clinical Associate Professor. Tom provided teaching to medical students, residents, and family physicians over 30 plus years.

Tom was a great asset to dermatology in Canada and was active on the Board of Directors of the Canadian Dermatology Association. Additional leadership roles included the presidency of the Pacific Northwest Dermatology Association and the chairmanship of the BCMA Section of Dermatology.
